The International Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) has reaffirmed the critical role of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing sustainable development and improving lives worldwide. Speaking during the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development Global Conference (IDSSD 2026) at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, ICAIRE emphasised that
strengthening AI capacity across communities is essential to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The conference brought together ministers, scientists, policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders from across the globe to discuss how science and innovation can contribute to sustainable development. ICAIRE, headquartered in Riyadh, was represented by Dr. Majed Al-Shehri, who outlined the center’s ongoing efforts to promote ethical, inclusive, and responsible AI adoption.
Turning Global Priorities into Action
Dr. Al-Shehri highlighted ICAIRE’s role as a UNESCO Category 2 Center, noting that the organization works closely with UNESCO to translate global AI priorities into practical programs that deliver tangible benefits for countries and communities. Through capacity-building initiatives and international collaboration, ICAIRE supports the responsible deployment of AI technologies while encouraging knowledge sharing and technical cooperation.
He stressed the importance of ensuring equitable access to AI technologies, particularly for developing nations, so they can benefit from expertise, innovation, and skills development. Expanding access to AI resources and strengthening local capabilities, he said, are essential for narrowing technological gaps and fostering inclusive growth.
Strengthening AI Readiness
ICAIRE continues to support governments, researchers, and policymakers by providing expertise in AI governance, policy development, and implementation. Dr. Al-Shehri reaffirmed the center’s commitment to empowering women and young people, while promoting broader participation in AI research and innovation.
He also highlighted ICAIRE’s support for UNESCO’s AI Readiness Assessment Methodology, helping countries assess their preparedness for AI adoption and transition from policy formulation to practical implementation. The center provides technical guidance, international best practices, and practical tools to help governments translate AI strategies into measurable outcomes.
Global Initiatives Driving Impact
During his address, Dr. Al-Shehri showcased several international initiatives spearheaded by ICAIRE. These include the Elevate Program, a global initiative developed in partnership with Microsoft and supported by the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA) to empower women in AI. He also highlighted the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad, which encourages young talent and promotes innovation in AI. Together, these initiatives reflect ICAIRE’s broader mission to foster inclusive AI ecosystems and ensure that emerging technologies contribute meaningfully to sustainable development worldwide.
