Saudi Arabia is transforming its western coastline into one of the world’s most ambitious luxury tourism destinations, combining pristine islands, coral reefs, deserts and mountains. Often compared with the Maldives for its turquoise waters and white-sand beaches, the Red Sea project aims to offer travellers a much broader range of experiences.
More Than a Beach Destination
Spanning around 28,000 square kilometres, the Red Sea destination includes an archipelago of more than 90 islands. Development, however, will be limited to 22 islands, with the remaining areas protected to help preserve the region’s natural ecosystems.
According to Stephen Cheesebrough, Head of Development at Red Sea Global, the project’s appeal lies in its diversity. While visitors may find crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches similar to those of the Maldives, the wider landscape offers a very different experience.
The destination combines islands with mountains, volcanoes, deserts and an extensive coastline. Travellers could spend a morning diving among coral reefs before exploring the desert or dining in a mountain setting later the same day.
With around 1,800 kilometres of coastline and largely untouched marine environments, the region is being positioned as an alternative for luxury travellers seeking destinations beyond established hotspots.
Focus on Regenerative Tourism
Environmental protection is another central element of the project. Rather than focusing only on conventional sustainability measures, the Red Sea development is built around the idea of regenerative tourism — an approach intended to leave the environment in better condition.
The project aims to demonstrate that large-scale tourism development and environmental restoration can work together. This includes designing hotels and destinations that contribute to the protection and recovery of surrounding ecosystems.
Renewable Energy and Resource Management For Red Sea Project
The development is also designed around renewable energy, water recycling and waste reduction. Its infrastructure aims to operate using renewable power, reuse water through advanced recycling systems and minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill.
These measures reflect changing expectations among luxury travellers, who increasingly seek distinctive experiences while paying greater attention to the environmental impact of their journeys.
With its combination of exclusive resorts, diverse landscapes and environmental initiatives, Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea project is seeking to establish a new model for luxury tourism — one that goes beyond traditional beach escapes and places nature at the centre of the visitor experience.
